sandcastle manifesto revisited

so six months later, it turns out that making yourself happy is really, REALLY hard. i wanted so much to believe that relying only on myself was an achievable goal. but i feel like i've been losing this fight for a really long time now. tips, anyone? how can you be happy by yourself?

I started really becoming happy with myself when I started doing things I really believed in (like when I started Bank Street). It made me feel worth something to the world and to myself, and not necessarily dependent on specific other people's validation.

Feed your passions, indulge your cravings, cut yourself a little slack, and sit back and enjoy life for what it is. Does it hurt sometimes? Yes. Do we have another choice? No. Try to do something each day that reminds you why life is worth it, whether it's eating a brownie hot from the oven, talking to a stranger, writing a song, or praying with tears in your eyes. The little things add up to a life that counts.

And always remember that you are an amazing woman--smart, beautiful, witty, passionate, and caring--and your friends love you. A lot.

My key to becoming happy: don't try to be happy. Go about your business and if you like what you're doing, the happiness will come. If you don't like it, it's time to change things up. Happiness is not something you can find; it's something that finds you.
